One of my favorite parts of running Lange Digital Solutions is getting the opportunity to meet passionate local entrepreneurs and share their stories. Through my Small Business Spotlight series, I sit down with business owners from our community to learn about their journey, their challenges, and the work they’re doing to serve others.

Recently, I had the chance to talk with Ellianna Reif, the photographer behind Timeless Tales Studio in Algoma, WI. What stood out immediately was not just her passion for the camera, but the passion she has for capturing moments that matter. As just a teenager, she already has more experience than many adults in the profession, and she has stuck with it long enough to create a thriving business when most teenagers are distracted by things like parties and social media.

Turning a Hobby Into a Business

Like many creative careers, Ellie’s journey into photography started simply.

It began with a camera that had once belonged to a relative. At first, she was just experimenting, going outside, clicking the shutter, and exploring the world through a lens. Over time, curiosity turned into deeper learning.

Her mother noticed the growing interest and helped her enroll in photography courses, which gave Ellie a better understanding of the technical side of photography, and suddenly things started to make sense.

Another big influence in her journey was her grandmother, who is a professional photographer in Michigan. During a family visit, Ellie had the opportunity to join her and see firsthand how a professional session works. That experience helped spark the idea that photography could be more than just a hobby.

On the drive home from that trip, the concept for Timeless Tales Studio began taking shape. What had possibly started as part of a school project, was about to quickly grow into something much bigger.

Today, Timeless Tales Studio focuses primarily on portrait photography, covering a wide variety of life moments. What makes portrait photography especially rewarding, she says, is the ability to freeze a moment in time. Photos often become keepsakes that families hold onto for years.

Some of the most common portrait sessions that they are involved with include:

• Senior photos

• Newborn photos

• Couples portraits

• Family photos

• Sports action photos

• Weddings

That last one is a big one. I can tell you from first-hand experience that shooting something as important as a wedding can be very intimidating. But for Ellie, these are her favorite types of events to be a part of! Weddings provide an opportunity to capture meaningful moments throughout an entire day, something she hopes to do even more of in the future.

Overcoming the Challenges of Starting Young

Starting any business comes with challenges.

Starting one as a young entrepreneur can add another layer of uncertainty.

Ellie shared that early on, she wondered whether clients might hesitate to book a photographer who hadn’t been in the industry for decades. It felt like being younger could be a disadvantage. But for every passion business, there is a moment that we can reflect on that keeps us going through difficult times.

For Ellie, that moment came during her first senior photo shoot.

Naturally, she was nervous.

But when the session ended, and the client saw the photos, the response was overwhelmingly positive. The excitement and appreciation from the client made the entire experience worthwhile.

Another memorable moment came when a client loved their photos so much that they ordered multiple printed products and wanted to share the business with others.

Those reactions, and seeing people genuinely excited about the memories captured in a photo, are what make the work meaningful. And over time, she realized something important.

Passion, preparation, and quality work matter far more than age.

Her experience serves as a reminder that it’s never too early to start pursuing something you care about. In fact, Ellie hopes her journey encourages other young people to take their hobbies seriously and explore turning them into something meaningful.

Looking Ahead

When I asked where she hopes the business will be in the next five to ten years, Ellie sees photography continuing to play a meaningful role in her life.

She hopes to photograph more weddings and continue capturing life milestones for families.

And of course, with a big extended family, there will be plenty of future opportunities to photograph nieces, nephews, and family memories along the way.

Sometimes the best business plans aren’t rigid roadmaps. They’re simply continuing to do the work you love and letting it grow naturally.
