There’s something deeply inspiring about watching someone turn their passion for family wellness into a small business that serves the community. That’s exactly what Jessica, founder of Sunshine and Sass Creations, has done… one elderberry syrup kit at a time.
In September, Sunshine and Sass teamed up with Bump and Beyond Family Wellness for a hands-on DIY Elderberry Syrup Night in Two Rivers, WI. The event brought together families eager to learn more about natural health, immune support, and the art of making their own elderberry syrup from organic ingredients. Between the laughter, learning, and the aroma of herbs and elderberry, we had an opportunity to sit down with Jess for an impromptu chat about her business, her mission, and what it really means to build something from the heart.

From Kitchen Experiment to Community Wellness Brand
Jess’s journey began, like many small business stories, at home, where she crafted wellness blends for her own family.
“I started by making elderberry syrup kits. I’ve used elderberry in my household for years and swear by it,” Jess said. “Most people buy syrup, but I love giving families the ability to make it themselves without all the store-bought additives. My kits are shelf-stable and include everything you need to brew it easily.”
From elderberry to her crowd-favorite Healthy Cool-Aid (a vitamin-rich herbal tea blend kids actually love), every product is made from organic, family-tested ingredients. Each blend carries a mix of homestead practicality and wholesome intention. It’s actual herbal goodness that’s simple, safe, and effective.
Marketing Naturally: The Sunshine & Sass Way
When it comes to promoting her products, Jess keeps things simple and authentic.
Her secret weapon? Social media storytelling.
“I always film short videos before markets start, showing where I’m set up, what’s restocked, or what’s new. Customers love it when I listen to their requests and bring those items. Those videos bring people out!”
Through short, real-life glimpses into her small business world, Jess connects with her audience in a genuine way. It doesn’t always have to be flashy, but it’s real marketing for real people.
Still, she admits that digital marketing doesn’t come naturally to everyone:
“Social media is my least favorite part,” she laughed. “I didn’t even have Instagram before this! I’d much rather spend 12 hours packaging products than trying to make reels.”
That honesty is something every small business owner can relate to. Building a brand online takes time, effort, and patience, and Jess is doing it one post (and one herbal blend) at a time.
Overcoming Growing Pains: The Power of Local SEO
Like many entrepreneurs, Jess struggled early on with getting her website seen online.
“I want to have an e-commerce business, but no one was finding my site,” she explained. “After working on SEO and optimizing everything properly, people can finally find my products!”
*A bit of backstory on this: back in February 2025, I met with Jess to discuss her business, and we started to put an “all things marketing” plan in place. Over the past eight months, Jess has allowed me to work on improving her online assets and overall presence through website optimization, local SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and a client outreach strategy. She has been doing the daily work to increase her content engine on social media within her business pages. And boy, has she ever!
In a very short time as far as business goes, she has seen some very impressive growth! With an increase in her social media presence and Google traffic jump of almost 350%, she has seen an increase of over 500% in sales…503% as of the moment that I write this…
You read that right. She has 5X her sales in just 8 months. Insert shameless plug for both of us, as we pat ourselves on the back!

A Vision for the Future
One of my favorite questions to ask small business owners is where the see their business being 5-10 years from now. I love how it makes people dream about what is possible, when maybe they have never thought that far ahead. There was no confusion for Sunshine & Sass Creations. When asked where she sees her business five to ten years from now, Jess didn’t hesitate:
“My dream is to make this my full-time job. I want Sunshine and Sass to be the trusted family brand for elderberry and natural wellness products. Being healthy doesn’t have to be gross. It can taste delicious and feel good for everyone.”
That passion for practical, family-friendly wellness shines through in everything she does, from the kits she crafts to the customers she serves. Getting to work with small business owners who have a passion for helping their community while supporting their families is truly one of the best parts of our job in marketing.
Partnering for Wellness: The DIY Elderberry Event
The September DIY Elderberry Syrup Night with Dr. Nadine from Bump and Beyond Family Wellness was a natural fit… literally.
“Dr. Nadine helped me package kits one night, and we started talking about how people might like different blends. (…) Maybe something spicy, soothing for coughs, and so on. That’s where the idea for this event came from,” Jess said.
Together, they created a “build-your-own elderberry blend” experience that combined wellness education, herbal creativity, and good old-fashioned community fun. Attendees sampled elderberry syrup, mixed it with lemonade, ate snacks, mixed their own herbal combos, and left with their own syrup kits for ready to brew health at home.
“Elderberry and chiropractic go hand-in-hand,” Dr. Nadine added. “Supporting your immune system naturally helps keep your family healthier through cold and flu season.”
The event was a hit, with a full room, smiling faces, and a shared excitement for future workshops.
